Square #53: Stained Glass Window Square

Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Yarn needed: colors medium (4) worsted weight yarn

Skills needed: chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochetdouble crochet

Notes: I did this wrong. But I decided not to really fix it. The inner square is supposed to look like this:

It definitely looks much better the correct way, but I decided it wasn't enough of a difference to rip out the whole thing when I only had the last framing row to go! Do as I say not as I do, gals.

Tools and Yarn for the Week of 6/29

This week two of our squares are patriotic in honor of the US playing in the first knockout game, and the 4th of July!  Accordingly, you will probably want red, white, and blue for those.  Otherwise we have a 3 color square, a 1 color square, and one which you will need 4 colors plus a small amount of white, black, and yellow for embellishments.

Happy hookin'!

MYSTERY SQUARE

This granny square is in my box of squares, and I obviously made it at some point.  But it doesn't match any of the patterns on my list!  Where did it come from?  Who knows!!!!

Square #47: Ruffle Flower Square

Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Yarn needed: 3 colors medium (4) worsted weight yarn

Skills needed: chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochetdouble crochet treble crochet

Notes: I'm a huge slacker today!  As you may have guessed, I have been doing the pictures and scheduling the posts and then going back and doing the text later.  Or not doing it as the case may be.  Sorry about the blank post all morning!  You can't even see it from the picture but there's a blue color in the midst of all those ruffles.  This is an 8 inch square, so to cut it down a little, I did the first four rounds with blue, and then skipped to 8 and 9 with the yellow color.  The real star of this square is the ruffle anyway!  And it was really fun to do.

Square #46: Garden Gate Square

Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Yarn needed: 4 colors medium (4) worsted weight yarn

Skills needed: chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochetdouble crochet treble crochet

Notes: This pattern is easier than it looks! It's a 6" square but it looks like I left out a row to make it small enough. I'm a loose crocheter!

Square #45: Rosie Posie Square

Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Yarn needed: 5 colors medium (4) worsted weight yarn

Skills needed: chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochetdouble crochet treble crochet

Notes: This pattern is in UK terms but y'all can handle it.  It's pretty cute I think! I added a DC round at the end to get the size up.

Square #44: Big Circle Square

Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Yarn needed: at least 3 colors medium (4) worsted weight yarn

Skills needed: chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochetdouble crochet treble crochet

Notes: I only did five rows of the circle and skipped the last row and let me tell you this square is still      huge. So I would think about doing 4 or maybe 3 rounds of the circle and then doing the edges. Remember to adjust your final row stich counts downwards.

Square #43: Circles in a Square

Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Yarn needed: at least 2 colors medium (4) worsted weight yarn

Notes: Don't forget to adjust the stitch count on your final row if you have to do less circles to make it the size that you want.  Mine was a bit of trial and error, and it doesn't take a very close look to see I sort of "improvised" on my last corner.

Head over to my Facebook page to see a picture of all 43 of the grannies submitted by a crochet friend who is stitching along!

Square #42: Stash Bustin' Flower in a Square

Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Yarn needed: 4 colors medium (4) worsted weight yarn

Skills needed: chain, slip stitch,
half double crochetdouble crochet,  treble crochet,  double treble crochet

Notes: Double Treble is a new one, but it's very easy to learn if you don't already know! If your finished square isn't measuring up, just repeat the last row until it is!

Square #41: Groovy Flower Square

Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Yarn needed: 4 colors medium (4) worsted weight yarn

Skills needed: chain, slip stitch, double crochethalf double crochettreble crochet

Notes:  This pattern is in UK terms so keep an eye out for that! Other than that it's cute and really fun to do!

Square #40: Pop Wheel Square

Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Yarn needed: at least 2 colors medium (4) worsted weight yarn

Skills needed:
chain, slip stitch, double crochet,  treble crochet

Notes:  Another pattern that it is in UK terms.  Remember that a British tr is a American dc, a British dtr is an American treble crochet, and a British afternoon event is an American revolution. Go Yanks!

Square #39: Lacy Granny Square

I can barely tell what this picture even is.  My bad guys.

Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Yarn needed: at least 2 colors medium weight (4) yarn

Skills needed:
chain, slip stitch, double crochet
Notes:  This blog is British and it IS in UK terms.  All you need to do is substitute “dc” for “tr” and “color” for “colour.”  (Hint: that’s the #1 way I can tell if a pattern is in UK terms versus US- how color is spelled.)  You can work this up in trebles though if you want!  You’ll just need to stop a row early at least.

Square #38: Thistle Square

Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Yarn needed: at least 2 colors of medium (4) worsted weight yarn

Skills needed:
chain, slip stitch, treble crochet, single crochet

Notes:  This one is a great study in treble crochets if you need to brush up.  Otherwise, it’s a nice, easy square.  Nothing too fancy.  I love the variations the pattern suggests in sizes and how fun they all look together!   Also, even though this blog is British, it does use US terms.

Square #37: Fall Flower Square

Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Yarn needed: 4 colors medium (4) worsted weight yarn

Skills needed:
chain, slip stitch, single crochet, double crochet,  treble crochet

Notes:  After yesterday’s great and grand adventure, this is a simple little relaxing fast square!  You will probably have to add rows on the edges to make it 6”.

Square #36: Palm Tree Square

Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Yarn needed: medium (4) worsted weight yarn in Palm Tree Colors (green, brown, and something for your background and border)

Skills needed:
chain, slip stitch, double crochet,  treble crochet, single crochet

Notes:  This one took quite a bit more time than the rest of them, but it really is worth it.  It’s not terribly challenging and it turns out really awesome looking.  I just made the background square until it reached 6” and quit.  Also notice that trc here is the abbreviation for treble crochet, no cluster.

Square #35: Jupiter Square

Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Yarn needed: 3 colors medium (4) worsted weight yarn.  I personally just realized that since it’s the Jupiter Square, I was probably supposed to use red for the center but uh this is uh an artist’s rendering of Jupiter, okay?

Skills needed:
chain, slip stitch, double crochet,  treble crochet, single crochet

Notes:  The TRC (treble crochet cluster) is just like the dctogs we did the other day. But also, here’s a tutorial: http://crochet.about.com/library/weekly/aa053103.htm

FLOWER IN A GRANNY SQUARE
Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Yarn needed: at least 2 different colors of medium (4) worsted weight yarn

Skills needed:
chain, slip stitch, double crochet, treble crochet, single crochet

Notes:  I only did two rounds and the border to make this the size I wanted.  You may need to do more. I crochet pretty loosely.

Square #33: Mini Mandala Square

Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Yarn needed: up to 6 colors of medium (4) worsted weight yarn

Skills needed:
chain, slip stitch, single crochet,  double crochet,  treble crochet

Notes:  This has some double crocheting together but there’s a description in the pattern.  Basically all you do is start a dc but don’t finish it, and keep making as many as it wants you to (here 3 or 4) and then finish them all at once.  It will make more sense when you read the directions!   Sorry I was late getting this one up today guys.  I have World Cup Fever.

Square #32: Easy Daisy Square

Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Yarn needed: 4 colors medium weight (4) yarn

Skills needed: chain, slip stitch, single crochet, double crochet, treble crochet

Notes:  Okay this is the best one.  Even my boyfriend loves this one and he's basically reacted to the rest of them with a mixture of support and disbelief.

Square #31: Citrus Smoothie Square

Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Yarn needed: medium (4) worsted weight yarn.  I used 6 colors, but you don’t have to.  The pattern only calls for 4.  Apparently I was just feeling fancy!

Skills needed:
chain, slip stitch, double crochet, single crochet

Notes:  Now we’re going to put together some of the stuff we’ve done lately (working in only one loop, long dcs) into one square.  When people dig through my granny square box, this one never gets the love it deserves.  This is one of my favorites!

Yarn and Tools for June 15 to June 21

We are using up to 4 different colors of yarn this week!

Important: one day is a daisy square, and one day is a palm tree square.  I don't want to stifle your creativity but keep that in mind when you're selecting your yarn!

Square #30: Long DC Square

Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Yarn needed: 3 colors medium (4) worsted weight yarn

Skills needed:
chain, slip stitch, double crochet

Notes:  This is my favorite square.  I love the way the Long DCs work.  The pattern link has a very in-depth guide to making this stitch, but ultimately it’s only a DC that you make in a slightly weird place.

Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Yarn needed: 3 colors medium (4) worsted weight yarn

Skills needed:
chain, slip stitch, double crochet, half double crochet, single crochet

Notes:  If you just look at the square, it seems hard.  But it’s not hard at all.  The pattern is also fantastic and clear.  This one is tons of fun and perfect as the summer flowers start to make their appearance this week!

Square #28: Spiral Granny Square

Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Yarn needed: 4 colors medium (4) worsted weight yarn

Skills needed:
chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet

Notes:  For me this one turned out a little wonky because I was running out of certain colors and it was like 2am.  But I think it’s a pretty cool pattern!  Definitely follow it very closely, but don’t be intimidated by the spirals.

Square #26: Heart Square

Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Yarn needed: three colors medium weight (4) yarn.  I would suggest red for one of the colors!

Skills needed:
chain, slip stitch, double crochet, treble crochet

Notes:  Awwwwdorable.  I added an extra row to make it bigger. The heart took a couple attempts to get right, but once it clicks, it’s a piece of cake.  This square is dedicated to you awesome people for making it this far!

Square #25: French Nanny Granny

Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Yarn needed: two colors, medium weight (4) yarn

Skills needed:
chain, slip stitch, single crochet, double crochet, treble crochet

Notes:  This pattern is in UK terms, so check out this chart to translate it.  I keep that chart open on my phone all the time, because I am very cool.  Essentially, the flower is made up of two loops.  You can stop at one if you are nervous about back post crochet, or you can follow this tutorial here: http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/how-to-work-backpost-doublecrochet-stitches.html.

Looking again at my square compared to the pattern, the flower doesn’t look quite right.  We’ll just call it an artistic interpretation.

Yarn and Tools for the Week of June 8 to June 14

It's Flag Day this week!  Bust out your red, white, and blue if you're feeling festive.  Otherwise, we will be using up to SIX colors this week.  But the 6 color square could be easily done with fewer colors if the mood strikes you.

Also this week, one of our squares will be a sunflower, so you may want to plan accordingly with your color choices!

Square #23: Celtic Granny Square

Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Pattern:
http://www.karpstyles.com/crochet/mary1.html#.U06STlVdU5X

Notes:  This is somewhat similar to that Four Hearts Square we did for Day 10 in that you add an item to the top of a created granny square.  SO you already know you can do it.  And this time it’s with a cute little flower.

Square #20: BLO Square

Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Yarn needed: one color, medium weight (4) yarn.  I actually used 3, which is not a huge variation, but I just had leftover baby yarn.

Skills needed:
chain, slip stitch, single crochetdouble crochet

Pattern:
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/blo-6-inch-square

Notes:  This one pretty much BLOs!!!  Hahahahahaha get it????  Because it’s all Back Loops Only for the most part.  Oh man, crochet humor. But seriously!  We covered how I’m a back loop only idiot a week or so ago, so you should be good to go.  I really enjoyed this one.
