Square #85: Kitty Square

Tools needed: size H hook, yarn needle, tape measure or ruler

Yarn needed:  at least 2 colors medium (4) worsted weight yarn

Skills needed: chain, slip stitch, single crochet, double crochet

Pattern: 
1. Ch 5, sc in 2^nd ch from hook, sc in remaining 3 ch – 4 sts.

2. Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next sc. You’ll work both sides of the starting ch so: 2 sc in next (bottom) sc, sc in the next 3 sc, join with sl st to 1^st sc. - 12 sts.

3. Ch 1, turn, sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next two sc, 2 sc in each of the next 3 sc, sc in the next 4 sc, 2 sc in last sc, join with sl st to 1^st sc. – 18 sts.

4. Ch 1, turn, sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in each of the next 3 sc, sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in last sc, join with sl st to 1^st sc. – 24 sts.

5. Ch 1, turn, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in last sc, join with sl st to 1^st sc. – 30 sts.

6. Ch 1, turn, sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 10 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc, join with sl st to 1^st sc.  – 36 sts.

7. Ch 1, turn, sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 10 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, sl st in next st, hdc in next st, ch 1, dc in same st as hdc, ch 1, tc in next st, ch 1, dc in next st, ch 1, hdc in same st as dc, sl st in next st (one ear made), sc in next 4 sc, sl st in next st, hdc in next st, ch 1, dc in same st as hdc, ch 1, tc in next st, ch 1, dc in next st, ch 1, hdc in same st as dc, sl st in next st (second ear made), sc in next 2 sc, join with sl st in 1^st sc. –52 sts.

8. Ch 1, turn, sc in next 3 sc, skip sl st, sc in next 4 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc, skip sl st, sc in next 4 sc, skip sl st, sc in next 4 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc, skip sl st, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 14 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, join with sl st to 1^st sc.  Fasten off. –56 sts.

9. With new color, join with a sl st to center sc of the three sc that form the top of right ear.  Ch 1, sc in same st as sl st, sc in next 5 sc, skip 1 sc, sc in next 2 sc, skip sc, sc in next 5 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 13 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 12 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 14 sc, join with sl st to 1^st sc. –60 st.

10. Dc in each st around with 3 dc in corner st until square is desired size.

Add face with french knots for eyes, and other embellishments as desired.
